The Ultimate Guide for a Fire Alarm System Technician

By Anistar Technologies | Candidates, Careers, Employee Resources, Job Seekers | Comments are Closed | 10 May, 2018 | 1

There may not be a more valuable profession right now than security systems technicians. Security systems and fire alarm systems are many times the first things that will alert us of burglaries and fires, and can prevent property damage and potential injuries from occurring. The one common theme among the best fire alarm systems technicians is they take their job seriously, follow all of the necessary educational and certification requirements and prioritize consumer security. Here is the ultimate guide if you’re looking to become a fire alarm system technician.

Notable Job Duties of A Fire Alarm System Technician

All fire alarm systems technicians have to be knowledgeable in installing systems for both residential and commercial settings. Some of the main job duties include, but aren’t limited to:

    • Installing relays, switches and control systems
    • Analyzing sketches of potential systems
    • Working with low voltage (up to 49 volts) in most cases
    • Using various control system software packages
    • Installing CCTV systems, smoke detectors or heat detectors, ventilation equipment and more
    • Understanding older technology in order to incorporate newer technology

    Required Training and Education

Some of the best technicians actually began their careers as general wire installers, whether it was for AV systems, CCTV systems or more. There are many different licenses and certifications you can get, but it’s important to check with your local agency to determine which ones are required for the area you plan on servicing. In the event you need to be a completely licensed electrician, you can expect to be involved in a 4-6 year program, which equates to roughly 1,000 hours of education and hands-on experience. Depending on your background, experience and desired position, the required training and educational requirements can vary significantly.

    National Certifications Can Help

The more certifications fire alarm systems technicians have, the better the chances they have of finding a job. Potential employers will always look for certifications on a resume, since it demonstrates your commitment and ability to handle the job. Some certifications may not necessarily be required, but the more you know, the better off you’ll be.

    Finding The Right Fit

One thing security systems technicians struggle with is finding the right opportunity after they’ve achieved the necessary education requirements and completed their training. There is a wide spectrum of jobs available, including working as a contractor. Many times the best thing technicians can do is submit their information to a hiring agency and allow them to find the opportunities suitable for them. This is sometimes an overlooked resource, but is an extremely valuable one.

Anistar Technologies helps fire alarm systems technicians in any way we can. We have access to a large pool of available jobs and can surely find an opportunity to fit your skills and desires. Our goal is to find the perfect match in a potential employer and help you get started with your career. To learn more about how we can help you get started, contact us at any time.
