5 Ways to be Prepared When Installing a Fire Alarm System

By Anistar Technologies | Careers, Employee Resources, Safety | Comments are Closed | 18 December, 2018 | 2

With so many moving parts of a fire alarm system, every component has to work effectively in order for it to operate as designed. This means fire alarm systems technicians have to be precise during the installation process and make sure nothing gets overlooked. Codes and standards can change over time, and it’s up to the fire alarm system installers to keep up with them. Here are five ways for service technicians to be prepared to install a new fire alarm system.

    Know The Code

Not only will knowing the installation code make a system operate effectively, but it can also avoid any fines or penalties for improper installation. Service technicians have to have a copy of the most recent local requirements before the installation process begins. Not doing so could create unnecessary delays and lead to more problems later on if installed incorrectly.

    Be Familiar With The System

As with anything, different manufacturers have their own ways of doing things. Fire alarm system installers have to be familiar with the system they are installing to make the process more efficient and to ensure nothing gets overlooked. The wiring could be slightly different among manufacturers, but this slight difference can make a significant impact on the process.

Study The Plan of Action Thoroughly

As all fire alarm systems technicians know, any approved blueprints or drawings should be followed exactly. If an error or omission is identified, then the technician needs to inform the building manager or engineer to ensure everyone is on the same page. It’s tempting to take a shortcut or take steps you think will make the process more efficient, but doing so may also come with consequences during the inspection phase.

    Address Any Issues Upfront

The ultimate goal with every fire alarm system installation is to have a fully-functional system in the end. So if any issues are detected throughout the planning or installation phase, it’s best to just address them upfront so they can be resolved quickly. Covering up issues will only create conflict, even if you think what you’re doing is the best course of action.

Work Closely With The Building Inspector

If there’s ever any doubt about any aspect of the plan, installation, testing or other phase, always consult the building inspector. Get all of your answers and information in writing to avoid any confusion later on, especially if the inspector changes at any point in the process. Taking this time upfront will save time, effort and potential headaches later on.
